YWCA Victoria is my local chapter of the YWCA. A local, national and global movement. Women-led, not-for-profit and focused on eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.
YWCA Vic is a secular (ignore the fact the “C” stands for Christian”) and feminist organisation that works to address gender inequality, supporting women and girls through mentoring, school programs, cultural events, advocacy, sports and housing. Currently YWCA houses nearly 300 women across the state, 70% of which have experienced family violence. They’ve also recently launched Thursdays in Black, which encourages schools and workplaces to have productive, early intervention conversations about domestic violence.
I wanted to shine a light on the Australian chapters as my Charity Of The Month for November, not just because they do endless, incredible work, but because it’s International Violence Against Women Day on November 25th, and these beautiful people do amazing work not only supporting victims in countless ways, but helping to raise awareness to put a stop to it.
There’s a variety of ways you can help or donate, and there are chapters both nationwide and globally. I’ve listed the contact details for each state below. Hit their websites and social media to get involved.
