It’s that time of year, where those of us who can give, need to give.
Which is why I’ve chosen FareShare as my charity of the month this month.
Because, we all wish and dream for a society where food is note wasted and no one goes hungry.
Rescue food that would otherwise be wasted.
Cook and distribute nutritious meals to people in need.
Inspire and empower action on food rescue and hunger.
FareShare rescues surplus food and cooks free, nutritious meals for Victorians doing it tough.
Every year, 3.6 million Australians will experience food insecurity. But, over the same period, we will also waste more than 360kg of food for every man, woman and child in the nation.
This doesn’t make any sense. FareShare is tackling the tragedy head on by rescuing surplus, quality food from supermarkets, farmers and other businesses and cooking it into nutritious meals.
These guys operate Australia’s largest charity kitchen from Melbourne. With the help of 850 regular volunteers, FareShare cooks 5,000 free meals a day for charities such as soup vans, homeless shelters, women’s refuges and community food banks.
FareShare’s new production kitchen, capable of cooking 5 million meals a year, will open in Brisbane in 2018 as part of an exciting new collaboration with Foodbank.
Since 2016, FareShare has also been growing our own vegetables to supplement what we can rescue for our nutritious meals. FareShare Kitchen Gardens now occupy 2.5 acres on three urban sites where we grow a range of veggies such as carrots, pumpkin, sweet potato and zucchini.
FareShare’s operations help avoid food waste and divert surplus, edible food from landfill. This reduces greenhouse pollution and ensures food produced for humans reaches those who need it most
We are a not-for-profit community organisation operating on a modest budget – thanks to the generosity of philanthropic foundations, businesses and private donors.
